Newsletter #4

I'm trying out MailChimp for our newsletter. So far I think I like it. Way easier to format and much prettier than using Thunderbird. The stats are neat too, albeit a tad disappointing.

Newsletter #3

It's nice to have a chance to write for work instead of making our logo eat stuff or wear funny hats.

Hello Nob Hill,
Merlot sure has a bad rap these days. A couple years of imperfect climate, a lot of overproduction and a certain scene from Sideways (link contains adult language) has relegated Merlot to the dusty quarters of our shelves and minds. Wine snobs pass it off as pedestrian, "...the quintessential entry-level red: soft, easy-drinking and rarely challenging."

Wait. Soft? Easy-drinking? Rarely challenging? That doesn't so bad. Sounds like a nice Friday night or the reason most bathroom reading material consists of old issues of US Weekly instead of Heidegger's Being and Time.
We want to bring Merlot back. It's great as a table wine, enjoying in the park with friends or pounding by yourself, trying to forget about how your girlfriend left you for that guy with the BMW and after that had the chutzpah to claim the dog in the breakup too. Really, it's a great wine for any occasion.

For the next week (4.8-4.15) we're offering Ray's Station 2006 Merlot for $4.99, regularly $8.99. This wine is ruby in color, smells of black cherry, chocolate, and spice. Red fruit and oak overtones carry well into a warm dry finish. With the exception of this newsletter this is an unadvertised sale, so take advantage.

We are now offering 10% off wine purchases, excluding wines already on sale, when you also purchase something from the deli and mention this newsletter. Is this starting to feel like a wine club or what? Oh, the exclusivity!

The next wine tasting event is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, April 27. We are still working out details with some vendors but when we have everything figured out we'll let you know. There was an excellent turnout last time and we are really looking forward to the next event.

As always feedback, suggestions, requests and questions are encouraged. If you haven't already, don't forget to love us on Facebook and Twitter.

Newsletter #2

I try to keep the tone friendly and approachable. It must have worked OK or people really liked the poster because a lot of people showed up. It actually was a great time.

Hello Neighbors,
This is just a friendly reminder that our monthly wine tasting will be this Wednesday, March 30th, at the Chameleon Cafe (1299 Pacific) from 6-8 pm. We will be sampling wines from Rancho Sisquoc. They've won a handful of awards including Double Gold from the San Francisco Chronicle. Rest assured that their wines are much, much better and tastier than their website. Just trust us.

We will also have snacks from 479 Popcorn. If you didn't get a chance to taste their stuff in the store last Monday you should look forward to that because it is quite good. Just when you thought the bacon craze had gone far enough someone had to go and invent Bacon Jam, so we'll give that a shot. There will also be sushi from Sushi Jack and crackers with a couple different cheeses.

We hope you'll make it down, it's going to be a great time. A wine tasting worthy of Dionysus himself! Remember, this Wednesday. Chameleon Cafe (1299 Pacific). 6-8 PM. Bring your roommates.

Also, don't forget to love us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest store news, deals, and events. Facebook has a new feature called "Deals" which allows us to set up a deal on our page and when you "check in" on your smart phone you receive the deal. Last week we gave away free bottles of wine, pretty sweet deal.

Wine Club Poster

The wine served at these tastings is not spiked with mescaline. Honest.

A Letter to the Drinking Community

We wanted to start a wine club at the store, not the sort of wine club that collects dues and ships bottles of wine in the mail but the kind of wine club that meets in person to, well, drink wine. We started recruiting members and sent out a newsletter. Here's the first:

Hello Neighbors,
Thanks for signing up for our wine newsletter. We're calling it the LeBeau Wine Club, and we're going to have meetings too (see below)! Hopefully through this newsletter and our Facebook and Twitter pages we can establish an open dialogue with you guys to make sure we're stocking what you like to drink. Our goal is to provide you with great wines at outstanding values, many in the $8-15 range. While the main focus of this newsletter is wine, other news from the store and deli can be found on our facebook/twitter pages so be sure to check those out.

Last month Chameleon Cafe (1299 Pacific) was kind enough to let us use their space to host a wine tasting. Thanks to those of you who made it out, it was a great time. For those who weren't able to make it, don't worry, we are trying to make this a monthly event. We're still ironing out some details with Chameleon and a few vendors but we're aiming to have a wine tasting the last Wednesday of every month. It's a free event so there's really no reason you shouldn't come down and have a glass(es) of wine and hang out for a bit. We're going to try new stuff and if you guys like it, we'll carry it. Maybe we can turn it into some sort of game and vote off wines to make room for new ones, who know's we're still pretty new at this. Anyway, March 30th, Chameleon Cafe - Free Wine Tasting.

We have some killer specials this week. You'll find the displays by the cash registers and produce table, by the bananas.
Hob Nob (France) Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel on sale for $6.99.
Ravenswood Vintner's Blend (California) Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Shiraz for $8.99
Cellar #8 (California) Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for $7.99

We would also like to remind you that we offer a 10% discount when buying six or more bottles of wine at a time, excluding wines currently on sale.

Thanks again for signing up. We're just getting this thing started so if you have any comments, questions, requests or feedback we would love to hear them. Shoot us an email, write on our wall or talk to one of the Alex's in the store. Have an awesome week and we'll see you March 30th.

Another straightforward one.

People don't seem to pay much attention to much of anything but their cellphones when grocery shopping so sometimes the best way to convey information is to send it home with them. I made this drop flyer to put in our shopping bags.

Celestially Badass Bovine

The deli got a new TV to display their menu. We plan to rotate images through on the screensaver to advertise specials and display store news. Here is the sign for the Tuesday dinner special. Ribs, from cows casting a celestial aura of wrath and deliciousness.

Death of a Sandwich

Another play on our logo, I designed this for the deli employee's uniforms. Nob Hill consumes a lot of sandwiches, in the most ferocious way. The design is printed on the back of the shirts because most of the time the employees have their backs towards the customers.

Food Being Fun(ny)

This is a poster I made for a hot dog eating contest, obviously. It's a fascinating thing to witness otherwise civilized people turn savage for a chance at a gift certificate and a little neighborhood fame.

Deli Logos

I made these logos for the new labels by using our existing logo to create caricatures of the foods they represent. Food should be fun.

Deli Labels

I designed these labels for our new label printer. They will be used on the deli's prepared foods, bulk items we package in-house and anything else that may need a label.
